NBA MONDAY ROUND UP

By Xola Magwaza · December 27, 2011 · 0 Comments

Hedo Turkoglu scored 23 points to lead five Magic players in double figures, as Orlando earned its first victory of the season with a 104-95 win over Houston on Monday night. Orlando got 13 points from Turkoglu and eight points from J.J. Redick in the fourth quarter to help the Magic stave off a handful of second-half charges by the Rockets. Dwight Howard finished with 21 points and Redick 20.

Kyle Lowry led Houston with 20 points and 12 assists, Luis Scola added 19 and Courtney Lee 15 off the bench. Center Samuel Dalembert, whose signing with Houston became official on Monday, had 10 points. Houston hung tough early, but was done in by shooting 43 percent (36 for 82) from the field for the game and 22 percent (6 for 27) from beyond the arc.

The retirement of Yao Ming has shifted much of the offensive onus for new coch Kevin McHale's team to his young guards. Though they came up short Monday, there is definitely a lot for McHale to work with. Lowry was just three rebounds shy of a triple-double, and Lee and Terrence Williams (13 points, six rebounds) also had their moments.

Okla. City 104, Minnesota 100: Kevin Durant scored 33 points to key a road victory. Russell Westbrook added 28 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Thunder. Kevin Love had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, and Ricky Rubio debuted with six assists, six points and five rebounds in 26 minutes for the Timberwolves.

Sacramento 100, L.A. Lakers 91: Marcus Thornton scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Kings beat the Lakers at home for the first time in more than three years. Tyreke Evans added 20 points for the Kings. Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and Metta World Peace added 19 for the Lakers, who opened the season with consecutive losses for the first time since 2002-03.

Toronto 104, Cleveland 96: Rookie Kyrie Irving scored six points and hardly played like the No. 1 overall pick, as the visiting Raptors spoiled the Cleveland guard's NBA debut. Irving, who played just 11 games at Duke before turning pro, finished 2 of 11 from the field with seven assists and one turnover in 26 minutes. The Cavs are counting on the 19-year-old to turn around a team that won just 19 games last season.

Toronto, which went 22-60 last season, won its first game under coach Dwane Casey.

N. Jersey 90, Washington 84: Kris Humphries was booed even before the start of the game between his Nets and the Wizards, presumably because of his much-hyped and short-lived marriage to reality TV star Kim Kardashian. Once the ball was in the air, Humphries gave Wizards fans reason to be angry, with 21 points and 16 rebounds to help New Jersey erase a 21-point deficit and come all the way back to win.

In a duel of two top point guards, Deron Williams had 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, getting the better of Washington's John Wall, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Wall had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but he only shot 3 for 13.

Charlotte 96, Milwaukee 95: Ex-Longhorn D.J. Augustin scored 19 points, rookie Kemba Walker added 13 off the bench - including two free throws with 9.9 seconds remaining - as the Bobcats erased a 14-point deficit to win.

Indiana 91, Detroit 79: Roy Hibbert had 16 points and 14 rebounds to help the Pacers defeat the visiting Pistons. David West, Indiana's big free agent addition, had 11 points and 12 rebounds, even though he made just 3 of 12 field goals.

Portland 107, Philadelphia 103: Former Longhorn LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points as the Blazers beat the 76ers. Gerald Wallace added 21 points and nine rebounds for Portland.

N. Orleans 85, Phoenix 84: Eric Gordon made a 20-footer from the top of the key with 4.2 seconds to play in his New Orleans debut, giving the Hornets a victory over the Suns. Gordon scored 20 points. Robin Lopez scored 22 points for the Suns. Steve Nash had 14 points and 12 assists but was scoreless in the final quarter.
