Juan Martin Del Potro has said his recent wrist surgery means he will be unable to defend his US Open title in August.
The world number five, who had surgery on his right wrist on May 4, instead hopes to return in time for the Paris Open indoor tournament in November.
"If all goes well, I'd return after the US Open," the Argentine said in Buenos Aires, having returned from a check-up with his surgeon in the United States.
Del Potro came from two sets to one down to beat Roger Federer in last year's final at Flushing Meadows, the 6ft 6in 21-year-old making full use of his thunderous forehand.
"The tournament is and always will be very special for me, all my life, but I don't want to rush things," Del Potro said.
"If I have to return next year or at Paris Bercy, I will," he added, referring to the Paris Open.
