Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson, aka Ochocinco, has been fined $20 000 for allegedly trying to bribe an official. Video Inside.
The league fined Ochocinco $20,000 for his tongue-in-cheek bribe of a game official with a $1 bill last Sunday. After ESPN reported the fine, Ochocinco confirmed it on hit Twitter account: "I knew 4 days ago, didn't tweet about it like I was told not to" After Sunday's game, he told NFL Network, "I was just being me ... to bribe the ref and make sure he was going to give us that call. "I wasn't going to do it for real."
NBC's Peter King has reported on Sunday night that the league was "not concerned about" the ploy. But the size of the fine suggests the league wants to dissuade players from even jokingly suggesting that officials can be influenced.
Ochocinco had borrowed a $1 bill from someone near the sideline and approached an official during a replay review of a catch he made near the sideline. The play was originally called a catch, and changed to an incomplete pass upon review.
Ochocinco coyly complained about the fine to President Barack Obama in a message on Twitter: "Barrack (sic) I've just been fined again, can we meet to set up a fun rule please. I can't go to mcdonalds for 2 weeks now. Smh”
